This was a brand new kitchen design and installation for a returning client, whose existing kitchen was on its last legs! My client wanted her new kitchen to be modern but also reflect the character of her beautiful heritage home in Melville. We stripped out the old kitchen, moved the position of the kitchen sink to the window, repaired the sagging timber floor, and chased all new electrical and plumbing points into the wall. We also added loads of extra cupboard space, wide under-counter pot drawers, and a wonderful large pantry cupboard next a brand new double door fridge.

The layout of the existing library was revised. By moving most of the bookshelves to the perimeter walls we opened up the library floor space into distinct areas for group activities, teaching, reading and learning. With a limited budget we added a new carpet tile from Belgotex and repainted the walls and ceiling. We channeled all messy surface mounted electrical and data cables through new bulkheads in the ceiling. We repurposed the existing furniture by sending armchairs and sofas to Mahomed and Son Upholsterers for a full facelift – sand down, new foam and new fabric – supplied by The Mill Fabrics and Weaver’s World (both mills have a range of awesome fabrics made right here in South Africa at very affordable prices). We also re-purposed much of the existing wood from the old bookshelves into the new bookshelves. The appointed local carpenter (Jacob’s Joinery) took on this challenge and supplied a final product of built in perimeter and free standing bookshelf gondolas that are not only beautiful and functional, but which also retain their history and preserve their value. We re-decorated the existing chandelier.
